Dhanush's Kolaveri Di very popular in B-schools

While Dhanush's " Kolaveri Di" has become an anthem for those young at heart, the soup song has now also become a subject of academic research at the Indian Institute of Management across the country.

According to a new survey, "Kolaveri Di" has become the top downloaded track on mobile with a score of 2,10,000 music downloads within 18 days of launch beating the previous records held by "Munni Badnaam Hui" and "Tere Mast Mast Do Nain" . Recently, the marketing club of IIM Ranchi organized a seminar on campus to study the strategy that has turned this number into an overnight rage."

The points discussed in seminar were - the song becoming a huge hit without having any element of glamour, adoption of a new concept that transcends the language boundaries and the audience accepting an experimentation that's different from the traditional genre of music. .

Meanwhile, Sajal Kumar, a student of IIM Kozhikode says, "We have a semester on social media where we learn the functioning and marketing strategies of viral videos so that they can be best utilized by companies. In my study, I interviewed non-Tamil speaking people and sought reasons behind them liking the song.

They said they like the peppy feel, funky music and the Tamlish lyrics. The video of song is shot in a studio with presence of cast from the movie. This has given it a different presentation by not entirely delinking it from the movie. The uniqueness of the entire project has worked in its favour."

IIM Lucknow has witnessed a jam-packed session at classes studying the song's marketing strategy. Says Preety Kerketta, an MBA final year student, "The classes had an elaborate session on viral and buzz marketing where the song was replayed .

There was an hour-long discussion between the professor and students in that class. The video on this session has also been uploaded on a social networking site." Says Harsh Raj, a student of IIM Ahmedabad, "We also had such a session going on at classes to discuss the marketing strategy behind the song. Not just IIMs, all business schools in the country will soon give more emphasis on such sessions with social media penetrating deep into our lives," Raj says. Students at IIM Bangalore had the song played for analysis in their marketing classes.

"There was a session on this song in the marketing classes of the final year MBA batch. For many of us, it was like playing the song during leisure hours when our faculty members were not present," shares Mayur Singh, a student from IIM Bangalore.

Though most of the IIMs have already started their research on the Dhanush hit, the fever hasn't caught on at IIM Indore in the academic context as yet.

Says Adhir Kumar Saxena, a student from IIM Indore, "We have not yet done anything specific on the academic front but the rage of the song can be gauged from the fact that this number is like a prayer song for us, a must at all parties. Not just Sonu Nigam's son's version or the other versions doing the rounds nationally, students from our campus too have changed the lyrics depending on the mood and have come up with their own "Kolaveri" numbers!"

Why this Kolaveri Di vs. Team Anna, Ramdev and 2G Scam

As many nations  in the Middle East were busy with the ‘Arab spring’, India also found itself occupied with nationwide anti-corruption protests. New faces and heroes emerged into the spotlight with names like Anna Hazare and Baba Ramdev making daily headlines. We also confronted emerging government scandals and accusations such as the ’2G Scam’, helping to snowball the anti-corruption movement against the Indian government.

Fast-forward to the end of the year, December 2011, a new spontaneous movement has surfaced. Only this time it is a viral movement of slapstick comedy and stereotypical integration of western and traditional Indian music called ‘Why this Kolaveri Di?’. In less than 3 weeks this song has taken over India. Songwriter and singer Dhanush made this song for an upcoming Tamil movie ’3′. This song can be seen as healthy and as comical relief for Indian society, which was flooded by corruption-related news all year. However,  a statistic pulled from Google’s search engine tells a sad and uninspiring story.

In short, when looking back at all search results typed on Google India; searches related to ‘Why this Kolaveri Di’ in the month of December were more than the entire year’s worth of searches related to all Baba Ramdev, 2G Scam and other anti-corruption protests.  Also,  in the start of December, Kolaveri Di’s highest point in searches was twice as much compared to the highest point of searches for all  of Team Anna’s protests and news (see below).

Thumbs up to the Indian youth. India’s connected generation definitely have their priorities straight and should expect their own spring and defeat of government corruption,  just like Egypt, Tunisia and Libya.

Akshay Kumar pips SRK to buy ‘Kolaveri Di’!

Mumbai: This real khiladi of Bollywood steals ‘Kolaveri Di’ from the badshah of Bollywood. Yes, Akshay Kumar has beaten Shah Rukh Khan by striking an early deal with Dhanush and buying the official rights of ‘Kolaveri Di’, a Tanglish song that has become a rage on Internet.

Talking to a daily, a source said, “SRK approached Rajinikanth for the rights of ‘Kolaveri Di’ for the song`s Hindi remake. But much to his surprise, he found out that Akshay Kumar had already bought the rights some time ago. When ‘Kolaveri Di’ first started to become a rage, Akshay immediately sensed its potential and approached Rajinikanth. SRK wasn`t too happy to know that he had lost the song.”

Interestingly, the Tanglish song enjoys a cult status; one wonders what impact the Hindi version of ‘Kolaveri Di’ will have on its fans.

Dhanush meets Amitabh Bachchan

Slowly yet significantly, Dhanush is climbing the ladder of success.

His movies continue to keep the ticket counters jingling and now his single from 3 — Why this kolaveri di has made him a national sensation in no time.

Such is his and his song’s popularity that B’wood stars have expressed their love for the song, first on the list being none other than Amitabh Bachchan. Rajinikanth’s son-in-law thanked the Big B in person when he went to meet the legend at his residence in Mumbai.

Dhanush’s humility had quite an impact on Senior B, who tweeted, “Dhanush! Of ‘why this Kolaveri di’ fame and star in his own right, visits the house to meet up. Simplicity in his demeanor!”

Dhanush, in no time reciprocated by saying, “Sr Bachchan, it was a pleasure and honour meeting you sir. I’m glad I received your blessings. Thank you ji.”

Kolaveri di milk version by Sonu Nigam's son Nevaan

After Rajinikanth's son-in-law, it is Sonu Nigam's son who has made the song Kolaveri Di famous, yet again. Nevaan Nigam has sung an endearing version of Dhanush' super-viral song, and guess what, in this the singer is asking his mama for 'milk-uh'! While the Dhanush original has clocked over 16 million clicks since November 16, Nevaan's version is also picking up pace with the clicks going from around 28,000 to 63,000 in just two hours (from 11.30 - 1.30pm today).

Nevaan NigamThe original song from Dhanush's film 3 with Shruti Haasan, is about a jilted lover mourning his unsolicited love over glass of scotch. Nevaan's version is a much more spritely version that pesters his 'mama' for a glass of milk instead. Despite a rather different approaches to the same song, both songs seem rather entertaining, if the number of clicks are to be believed.

This is how the milk song goes: "Hand...u glass...u milk...u, milk..u colour..u white...u, Yempty glass...u, mamma come...u, give me milk..u dear..u"

‘Kolaveri Di’ tweets between Rajini and Big B family

It’s immaterial whether you understand what it means or not but the foot-tapping number sung by Dhanush and composed by debutant music-director Anirudh Ravichander will certainly provoke you to shake a leg. The track is simply irresistible.

A song whose lyrics make no sense has created hysteria and its unconventional packaging is what has appealed to the listeners.

Big’s and Rajini’s family took to the Twitter to exchange pleasantries on ‘Kolaveri Di’.

Take a look at what they had exchanged:

Abhishek Bachchan: “ how cool is Kolaveri di!!! slamming it LOUD! well done Dhanush and Aishwarya. big up guys! If you like Kolaveri di you guys must check out manmatha rasa. One of Dhanush`s early songs. MINDBLOWING!! how does he move like that? (sic)

Dhanush thanked junior Bachchan and wrote, “@juniorbachchan thanks bro :) glad you liked my song. And congratulations for your beautiful baby girl. God bless

Last week, Big B had tweeted, “Just heard #Kolaveri after much talk on it ... its so original and catchy...congrats Dhanush and Aishwarya (Rajni`s daughter) .. love(sic)”.

Thanking Big B, daughter of Rajinikanth and a proud wife of Dhanush, Aishwaryaa tweeted, “Thank u so much @SrBachchan uncle…truly means a lot when u say it ..#Whythiskolaveridi(sic)”.

Dhanush: Rajinikanth likes Kolaveri Di

Dhanush speaks about his Kolaveri Di number...

"It feels nice when people are open with their praise for your work. I honestly didn't think the song would be such a craze. This has made me realize that people universally want only simple lyrics and simpler tune from filmmakers," begins Dhanush, who has both penned the lyrics and sung the Kolaveri number, "My poor broken English lyrics, written in a silly tone, and borderline singing has proved to be advantageous for the success of this song."

He continues, "I agree the lyrics is absolute nonsense and is written in Tanglish. That's probably why people everywhere relate to it." But the actor says it doesn't mean he will continue to write only conversational lyrics in future as well.

"The other songs in the film are both poetic and simple. I understand that at times, lyrics should make sense," he smiles. Meanwhile, he is very happy with the comments he has been getting from some of the biggest names in the industry. "It was nice of Amitabh Bachchan to listen to our song and congratulate us for it. My father-in-law, Rajinikanth, is equally thrilled, and he is proud his daughter Aishwaryaa has come out of his shadow to make a name for herself," he says.
