Sanjay Dutt to do item number in 'Zilla Ghaziabad'

Bollywood actor and producer Sanjay Dutt is going to do an item number in director Anand Kumar's 'Zilla Ghaziabad'. Dutt's performance in 'Agneepath' has received accolades from all quarters and thus the makers want to cash his popularity. Shriya Saran will be Dutt's co-star in the item number.

The song is called 'Jashn Adhura Hai' and it comes in the film at a crucial juncture. The director Anand Kumar says," There is a gangster party going on with participants like Arshad Warsi, Ravi Kishan, Ashutosh Rana and thirty other actors. Sanjay comes there and from there the party belongs to him only. Everybody is wondering what the cop is doing here, so it's kind of warning to the baddies."

The film also features Vivek Oberoi and is expected to be released in May, 2012.

Move over 'Sheila', 'Chikni chameli' is here

Katrina Kaif can move, and how! The Britain-born actress might have taken time in perfecting her Hindi accent, but Bollywood's latka-jhatkas is something she has mastered, and proves with her latest item song "Chikni chameli".

Industry members are smitten with the song. They feel it will definitely be a USP of Karan Johar's remake of his father's classic "Agneepath", and overshadow "Munni", "Sheila", "Shalu" and "Jalebi bai" item numbers.

Composed by national award-winning duo Ajay-Atul, the spicy song, sung by Shreya Ghoshal, is the Hindi version of their own Marathi hit "Kombadi palali".

The lyrics of the number, penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya, are as cheesy as they could get, but the rhythm is extremely peppy and catchy. And Katrina's vigourous moves and sensual expressions, choreographed by Ganesh Acharya, go in total sync.

The 26-year-old had set a benchmark with "Sheila ki jawaani" last year, but with this song, she has surpassed it with her killer desi look.

"Agneepath" director Karan Malhotra is all smiles and believes Katrina has done full justice to the song.

"I think the way the song was made, it was so wonderful, that only a topmost actress could have done justice to the song. And as far as Katrina is concerned, her USP is that she has never been seen in any film in that kind of zone that 'Chikni chameli' is in...which is why she also stands out in that atmosphere and that is why the song is catching a lot of eyeballs," Malhotra said at the music premiere of "Agneepath".

As much as he avoids talking in media about Katrina, even Salman Khan, her former beau, couldn't stop raving about the song.

"I love the song! I saw it a few days back and I am completely smitten by it. A lot of hard work has gone behind it and it is visible on the screen. Hats off to Katrina. She has come a long way," Salman said at a recent event in Mumbai.

A 30-second promo of the song was first launched, followed by an over two minutes-long video on YouTube. The video has registered over 3 million hits so far, and producer Karan Johar is ecstatic.

"The nation is singing and dancing to 'Chikni chameli', so I am really excited about it. It is already an established big hit song," Johar said.

According to Atul Gogavale, "Katrina spent eight days in rehearsal before starting to shoot the song. It took nine days to finish the shoot, and her energy levels never saw a dip."

"This song has a very high tempo and requires speed in steps. Even if I or someone else wants to dance to it, you cannot match up to the tempo for more than two minutes. But Katrina just took it to another level. She has left us speechless," he said.

Celebrities from the film fraternity feel Katrina has raised the bar of item numbers with her energetic dance steps.

Writer Milap Zaveri tweeted: "Katrina's dance steps in 'Chikni Chameli' are too brilliant and energetic! But there should be a disclaimer saying 'Don't try this at home!'"

"'Chikni chameli' from 'Agneepath' is just outstanding. I have never seen an actress dance like Katrina does - she raises the bar to another level," tweeted Ritesh Deshmukh, who recommended Ajay-Atul as composers for the film.

Even choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant, who has choreographed item numbers like "Kajra re" says she is in awe of Katrina's effort.

"Katrina is looking very good in 'Chikni Chameli' and I told Karan (Johar) about it. I really loved it and whenever Katrina comes and does a song like this, you know what the effect is," she said.

The action-drama slated for a Jan 26, 2012 release, features Hrithik Roshan as Vijay Dinanath Chauhan, originally played by megastar Amitabh Bachchan in Chandan Barot's directorial venture of the same name.

Priyanka Chopra, Sanjay Dutt and Rishi Kapoor will also be seen in key roles in the movie.

'Rascals' fails to make money at the box office

If the opening figures of Rs 7.25 crore across India were any consolation, the following days didn't do much to boost the morale of Sanjay Dutt who ventured into production with 'Rascals'.

The comedy, also featuring Ajay Devgn, under the aegis of David Dhawan failed to retain audience interest.

According to trade analysts, the movie, which cost Rs 50 crore (including prints and advertising), is not likely to break even, forget making money for the actor-producer and his investors.

Considering numbers like R 5.75 crore (Friday), R 5 crore (Saturday) and R 5.5 crore (Sunday), trade analyst Amod Mehra says, "The writing on the wall was there to be seen on Friday itself.

And it was reiterated on Saturday, which registered numbers over 30 per cent less than Thursday." He added that the crash Monday onwards was imminent due to poor content and lack of positive word of mouth.

Mehra dubs the other releases 'Soundtrack' and 'Love Breakups Zindagi' as washouts.

"A few shows of 'Soundtrack' were cancelled. 'Love Breakups Zindagi' too barely saw much occupancy, averaging under 10 per cent," he adds.

The head honcho of a national multiplex chain on condition of anonymity attributes the average occupancy for Rascals to a negative response from the audience.

"People were finding it difficult to sit through two-hour long film that lacked a decent script," he says.

Though his G7 Cineplex in Bandra and Maratha Mandir in Mumbai Central witnessed 95 per cent occupancy for Rascals, Manoj Desai attributes Monday's drop to poor public response.

"Hearing about people walking out in the interval is funnier than the film itself. The audience feels there's more skin show on television than by Kangna Ranaut in the movie, and even that wasn't a script requirement as there was no story to begin with," he says.

Prakhar Joshi of PVR Cinemas feels that Soundtrack deserved a better release time. "Despite being a remake, it's a fairly well made film. Had it released at a more suitable time, it would have done better business," he sums up.

As for Zayed Khan and Dia Mirza's production debut, 'Love Breakups Zindagi', our multiplex man maintains, "It's not even in the discussion."

Which is surprising, given the actor-producers and their director partner Sahil Sangha celebrated the movie's success over the weekend.

"Such events are to celebrate the film's successful release, and not success at the box-office," explains Mehra.

John Abraham's 'Force', which released a week earlier, continued its run, making comparatively more money from the single screens.

By Sunday, it had netted over R00 27 crore, thanks to more than 40 per cent occupancy in the solo theaters in the country.

'Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster', which released along with 'Force', did decent business over the weekend. "Good content is working for the ticket-buying audience," observes Joshi.

Salman convinced me for Bigg Boss: Sanjay Dutt

Bigg Boss Season Five has come full circle as far as its hosts are concerned. Five seasons ago, Arshad Circuit Warsi hosted the first season that was shot at Karjat’s ND Studios for Sony Entertainment, followed by Shilpa Shetty, Amitabh Bachchan, and finally Salman Khan, who anchored the show for Colors.

Today, Sanjay Munnabhai Dutt will be shooting his first episode for season five with co-host Salman at the same studio. “When I took up the show and the on-air dates were decided, I didn’t make that connection. But now, I’d say it’s amazing,” beams Sanjay. “I’m not trying to pit Salman against anyone, but I watched the last season only for him.”

He asserts that his buddy had been coaxing him to take up TV shows for many years now, and he had even shot a promo of a game show called Mission Dus Crore for Sahara One, though it never took off.

“There were concepts, but I wasn’t comfortable with them. The one that I shot a promo for was one of the few that sparked my interest, but sadly, it never saw daylight. Even this time, when Bigg Boss was offered to me, it took Salman’s convincing for me to take it up. He assured me that he’d be there, and that I’d pull the show off,” says Sanjay.

Earlier this year, there were reports that Salman had recommended that the producers of Dus Ka Dum get Sanjay to anchor the third season. Sanjay says, “I’ve been on the show and I’ve enjoyed it. Salman had spoken to me about it, but until the producers make me an offer, whether I’d do the show or not doesn’t warrant a comment.”

Salman is like my younger brother: Sanjay

Actor Sanjay Dutt, who is ready for his television debut with "Bigg Boss 5" that goes on air Sunday, says Salman Khan, his co-host on the reality show, is like a younger brother to him.

"He (Salman) is like a younger brother to me and we have done a couple of movies together and you can see the Big Boss promos. There is so much of chemistry. So it will be fun," said Sanjay. This is their first small screen venture, but the two actors teamed for movies like "Saajan" and "Chal Mere Bhai".

But for his new innings, 52-year-old Sanjay is happy to have Salman's company. "It's a new thing for me to go on television, but I am happy that Salman is with me.That will really help me a lot," he said. The on-screen promos of the show have been promising and reveal how the duo would create double trouble for the contestants, who will be locked in a house for three months and be under 24-hour camera surveillance. The official list of participants for the season is yet to be unveiled.

Sanjay Dutt gifts Rs 30 lakh bike to Ranbir Kapoor

Ranbir Kapoor might have left some of his old friends (read Sonam Kapoor, Imran Khan) behind, but he is sure making some new buddies in B'town. The fourth generation Kapoor lad, who turned 29 yesterday, has found a new best friend in the 52-year-old Sanjay Dutt.

Sanjubaba not only dropped by at the surprise party planned at a Juhu nightspot by Rockstar producer Ashtavinayak to wish the young actor but also bought him a bike worth Rs 30 lakh.

A source informed Mumbai Mirror, "Ranbir and Sanjay Dutt are neighbours. They both live around the same place in Bandra. Also, Dutt has seen Ranbir grow up. They work out together at the same gym in Dutt's building Imperial Heights. Though Ranbir has his own trainer, he had always looked up to Sanju."

"When it came to buying a gift for Ranbir, Dutt immediately thought of a bike. Sanju knows how much Ranbir loves bikes," added the source.

This might make a lot of people in Bollywood wonder why their love for bikes went unnoticed by Sanjubaba. After all, a Rs 30 lakh bike is a dream come true for many. However, one may recall, that Sanjay Dutt's love for Ranbir goes back a long way.

In a past interview with Mumbai Mirror, Dutt, proclaiming his love for the Kapoor boy had mentioned how the young actor should now venture into action films. Dutt, who believed that an actor is incomplete without a macho character to his name, even mentioned in the interview that he intends to remake his father Sunil Dutt's film Mujhe Jeene Do with Ranbir in the lead.

When contacted, Sanjay Dutt still seemed to be pondering over the gift option. "I am thinking of gifting Ranbir a bike. I don't know if it's a good idea or not. But he is a lovely boy and I am very fond of him," said the man.

Our source confirmed, "Dutt gifted the bike to Ranbir last night. It apparently costs around Rs 30 lakh."

‘Rascals’ Sanjay, Ajay spill beans about bikini shopper David!

How can the affair be not eventful, when the house is full of ‘rascals’? At the music launch of David Dhawan’s new comedy caper ‘Rascals’, lead duo Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgn amused all by revealing that portly director David Dhawan was caught buying bikinis in Bangkok where the team was shooting for the flick.

Sanjay and Ajay with a wicked grin said, "Once David went missing from the sets and we looked for him everywhere. After sometime we discovered that he went bikini shopping for the actresses."

But the big hearted Dhawan took it sportingly and as a matter of fact had a bigger secret to reveal about his actor and close pal Sanjay Dutt who he lovingly calls Sanju.

David revealed that during the initial years of his career when he began directing Sanjay`s films, Sanjay would keep rejecting his heroine and would zero upon the fourth or the fifth one. Well, but what was Sanjay`s criteria of finalising his heroine?

To that Dhawan remained tight lipped lest he face the ire of fiery Dutt. Is that so David?
