'Rascals' fails to make money at the box office

If the opening figures of Rs 7.25 crore across India were any consolation, the following days didn't do much to boost the morale of Sanjay Dutt who ventured into production with 'Rascals'.

The comedy, also featuring Ajay Devgn, under the aegis of David Dhawan failed to retain audience interest.

According to trade analysts, the movie, which cost Rs 50 crore (including prints and advertising), is not likely to break even, forget making money for the actor-producer and his investors.

Considering numbers like R 5.75 crore (Friday), R 5 crore (Saturday) and R 5.5 crore (Sunday), trade analyst Amod Mehra says, "The writing on the wall was there to be seen on Friday itself.

And it was reiterated on Saturday, which registered numbers over 30 per cent less than Thursday." He added that the crash Monday onwards was imminent due to poor content and lack of positive word of mouth.

Mehra dubs the other releases 'Soundtrack' and 'Love Breakups Zindagi' as washouts.

"A few shows of 'Soundtrack' were cancelled. 'Love Breakups Zindagi' too barely saw much occupancy, averaging under 10 per cent," he adds.

The head honcho of a national multiplex chain on condition of anonymity attributes the average occupancy for Rascals to a negative response from the audience.

"People were finding it difficult to sit through two-hour long film that lacked a decent script," he says.

Though his G7 Cineplex in Bandra and Maratha Mandir in Mumbai Central witnessed 95 per cent occupancy for Rascals, Manoj Desai attributes Monday's drop to poor public response.

"Hearing about people walking out in the interval is funnier than the film itself. The audience feels there's more skin show on television than by Kangna Ranaut in the movie, and even that wasn't a script requirement as there was no story to begin with," he says.

Prakhar Joshi of PVR Cinemas feels that Soundtrack deserved a better release time. "Despite being a remake, it's a fairly well made film. Had it released at a more suitable time, it would have done better business," he sums up.

As for Zayed Khan and Dia Mirza's production debut, 'Love Breakups Zindagi', our multiplex man maintains, "It's not even in the discussion."

Which is surprising, given the actor-producers and their director partner Sahil Sangha celebrated the movie's success over the weekend.

"Such events are to celebrate the film's successful release, and not success at the box-office," explains Mehra.

John Abraham's 'Force', which released a week earlier, continued its run, making comparatively more money from the single screens.

By Sunday, it had netted over R00 27 crore, thanks to more than 40 per cent occupancy in the solo theaters in the country.

'Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster', which released along with 'Force', did decent business over the weekend. "Good content is working for the ticket-buying audience," observes Joshi.

Review: Rascals is plain lame!

Recycling paper is nice. Recycling movies? Now that's plain lame. But director David Dhawan  has never been the discerning sort. He painstakingly built his brand around cheesy, slapstick wit, resolutely steering clear of logic, relying on spontaneity and a cast skilled in comedy to accomplish the shtick to which his coterie of writers like Rumi Jaffrey, Anees Bazmee, Sanjay Chhel, Kader Khan and Yunus Sajawal have contributed immensely.

For his latest Rascals, starring Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgn Dhawan sponges a bunch of comedies from his own stable and outside to rustle up a series of misadventures that are dumb, dated and dreary. But that's not its only problem. Rascals, with no structure or motive, cannot (rather does not even try to) conceal its desperation to make itself funny. And this insecurity shows in each and every gag.
What begins as a mindless laugh raiser with a set of 2D animated opening credits, quickly establishes itself as a tale of two swindlers Chetan (Dutt) and Bhagat (Devgn) (an obvious swipe on the author lacks the punch of Amar Prem), engaging in some vacuous, worn-out tricks, to steal from an unsuspecting Anthony Gonsalves (Arjun Rampal in an indifferent cameo) and win the affections of a doltish heiress (Kangna Ranaut) in Bangkok. This flake of a story, believe me or not, is pretty much the entire plot.

Unless making light of poverty, charity, handicap or a sexed-up version of Andaz Apna Apna meets Jodi No 1 meets Deewana Mastana meets Bluffmaster is your idea of a joke, those laugh lines won't budge.

Moreover, why on earth would you want to contend with all that screeching for effect, rhyming dialogues to pinch a cackle and constant parade of zero-intellect women with size zero bodies in a wardrobe that's as scant as Rascals' credibility?

And haven't enough award functions taken potshots at Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Black and Guzaarish already? Find a new punching bag, Bollywood.
Often you crave for a Govinda, a Kader Khan or a Johnny Lever to drop in and elevate this drivel to an acceptable level of idiocy. Instead you get a super annoying Chunky Pandey  and Satish Kaushik, with their false accents and ridiculous get-ups jostling your senses to evoke a titter.

Of its actual cast, Devgn is a notch better here than his Golmaal appearances and that's mainly because he stays off body-hugging pink tee-shirts. Dutt is saddled by thankless role that makes him look silly for trying and sillier if he doesn't Far from giving them amusing lines to deliver, Dhawan gets two of Bollywood's worst dancers to shake a leg on Vishal-Shekhar's noise of a soundtrack.

Last but not the least; let me draw your attention to the most offensive aspect of Rascals. Its women. Both Kangna and Lisa Haydon are reduced to pea-brained ob-jects of lust with absolutely no self-respect for themselves or their tribe. And so when Dutt equates Kangna's shrill cries to a dog's yelp after someone steps on its tail, you simply nod in agreement.

Salman will watch 'Rascals'

Though he is running out of time, Salman Khan wants to watch his buddy David Dhawan's 'Rascals' before he leaves for Dublin to resume shooting and the director in the meantime is ensuring that the film is screened for all and sundry.

Salman incidentally never watches any film. But since this is his soul-brother Sanjay Dutt's first production, Salman is willing to make an exception.

"Salman is very disturbed by the recent reports suggesting a rift between him and Dutt. He wants to somehow fit a screening of 'Rascals' in his airtight schedule, so he can recommend the film to his fans. It's the least that Salman can do. David was overwhelmed to hear this, since he knows Salman doesn't watch films," says a source.

David spent a delightful Saturday evening with Salman, Ajay Devgn and Sanjay shooting for 'Bigg Boss'.

"We all become the 'Rascals' on the set. It was Salman and Sanju's first day of shooting for the show. Seeing their camaraderie I've decided to cast them together in a comedy," David says.

While other directors and producers tend to be ultra-secretive refusing to let a single soul watch their films before release, David has gone the other route with his new comedy.

Every single day there are two-three screenings for friends, friends of friends, and friends of those friends.

In fact there are so many screenings that Sanjay, who turns a full-fledged producer with 'Rascals' has cancelled plans of an elaborate premiere.

David says he is fearless about adverse reports on 'Rascals' being messaged to the audience.

Reasons the simple and straightforward storyteller, "What is there to hide? If my film is funny and interesting I can tell by the preview audiences' reactions that they are entertained. If my film is not interesting then no power on earth and no amount of secrecy can rescue it."

David says there are three sets of previews for 'Rascals' happening simultaneously.

"My friends, Sanju's friends and Ajay's family and friends are holding screenings every day. We want as much feedback as possible," he adds.

‘Rascals’ Sanjay, Ajay spill beans about bikini shopper David!

How can the affair be not eventful, when the house is full of ‘rascals’? At the music launch of David Dhawan’s new comedy caper ‘Rascals’, lead duo Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgn amused all by revealing that portly director David Dhawan was caught buying bikinis in Bangkok where the team was shooting for the flick.

Sanjay and Ajay with a wicked grin said, "Once David went missing from the sets and we looked for him everywhere. After sometime we discovered that he went bikini shopping for the actresses."

But the big hearted Dhawan took it sportingly and as a matter of fact had a bigger secret to reveal about his actor and close pal Sanjay Dutt who he lovingly calls Sanju.

David revealed that during the initial years of his career when he began directing Sanjay`s films, Sanjay would keep rejecting his heroine and would zero upon the fourth or the fifth one. Well, but what was Sanjay`s criteria of finalising his heroine?

To that Dhawan remained tight lipped lest he face the ire of fiery Dutt. Is that so David?

Kangana dons a bikini in Rascals!

After much speculation and hullabaloo over Kangana Ranaut donning a bikini in her upcoming movie Rascals, the news has finally been confirmed!

The actress who was in the news for her initial reluctance to the bikini finally gave into director David Dhawan’s request. The petite actress has shot in a bikini for a particular sequence in the movie, which is seen in the first promo of the movie.

Apparently the actress had refused to be shot in a bikini clad avatar as she was apprehensive about her weight and did not want to don a bikini until she was completely confident about her look in the scenes.

However, she finally did go for it and the result, we say is mighty impressive with the actress looking sizzling in her white bikini and cool classy aviators!

Produced by Sanjay Dutt Productions and Rupali Aum Entertainment, ‘Rascals’ is a rib-tickling comedy starring Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgn who play two cool competing conmen who try to outwit each other to win the heart of the surprisingly elusive Kangana!

The movie is slated for a Dusshera release on 6th October.
